Two years as an Intern Architect and four as a Licensed Architect, I grew the most during my time with Baker Architecture + Design. This small studio environment acted as the perfect incubator where I was encouraged to spread my design wings and to take on more of a project management role. It was here I developed a deep love for educational design, marketing, graphics, and interiors.

Hired for my Building Information Modeling (BIM) knowledge, I was brought on board with the goal of transitioning the firm away from two-dimensional drafting. The majorty of my time was spent as BIM manager and production lead, completing over 20 construction packages ranging from small tenant improvements to ground-up, 50,000 sq ft school facilities, adaptive reuse and preservation projects, multi-family housing, food service, and community and service based projects.

Beyond my day-to-day modeling and drafting responsibilities, I also led all marketing and planning efforts, completing over 15 winning proposals and multiple facility analysis and planning documents for the firm.

My time with Baker A+D was momentous in the amount of hands-on learning I experienced and my proximity to award winning, experimental design. I was often stretched among multiple disciplines and supporting a workload that encompassed everything from drafting and design to finish selection, rendering, marketing, office management, construction administration, outreach, and employee training. It was this breadth of experience that created the well rounded Architect I am today, capable of assisting and / or leading any work effort in a professional studio setting. I also developed my appreciation for smaller firms where one is not restricted to any particular department or role but an integral player in all facets of the design process.

After 7 years with the firm I felt it was time to move on to other opportunities at which time I went to work for Formative Archtiecture. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made. A testimate to the firm and all those I worked with.

Architect of Record: Work Completed while employed with Baker Architecture + Design

Client: Bernalillo County

General Contractor: Epic Mountain Construction

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Dates: 2018 - 2021

Size: 6,818 Sq Ft

Role: I acted as Project Architect for the entirety of the project, from concept to construction. This unique project sought to solve the homeless crisis in Albuquerque with a proposed system never been used before in the state. 30 Tiny homes (120 sq ft ea.) encircle a large village house, complete with showers, counseling offices, laundry, and shared common spaces. The project consisted of several community charrettes and presentations all of which I helped organize and lead.

I was later invited by AIA National to be part of a presentation / panel discussion regarding "Belonging" and how the THV aimed to create a sense of belonging for its residents.

Architect of Record: Work Completed while employed with Baker Architecture + Design

Client: Amy's Donuts

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Dates: 2016

Size: 1,500 Sq Ft

Role: I acted as Project Architect and design lead for this Interior Design exercise. By working collaboratively with the owner, the team identified the primary goal: Create an iconic, comfortable space utilizing existing brand colors and local symbology.  Warm woods balance out the bright brand colors while soft, donut like shapes and angular soffits bring a sense of whimsey to this otherwise mundane commercial space.  In contrast to the brands other locations, the intention was for people to sit and spend time, treating the space more like a botique coffee shop rather than an run-in, run-out donut establishment.

The project was eventually constructed but the owner chose to go a different direction, completing much of the interior design work themselves.

Architect of Record: Work Completed while employed with Baker Architecture + Design

Client: New Mexico Highlands University

General Contractor: Franken Construction

Location: Las Vegas, NM

Dates: 2014-2016

Size: 21,500 Sq Ft

Role: As an intern on the renovation of the historic Las Vegas Trolley Barn - now home to the NMHU Department of Media Arts - I had the opportunity to assist in several key areas of the project, including BIM model management, design development, and furniture and finish selection. A 105 year old Romanesque Revival structure, the building had deteriorated to just its stone walls. Working along side the Project Architects and the NM Historic Preservation Division, we developed a concept that preserved the historic facades while integrating a modern program to supports the high-tech curriculum.

Adapting key historic features like an overhead hoist into a custom conference table, embedded rails in the floor to capture the original path of the Trolley, and painting the original structure a bright orange, this was a true adaptive reuse project that ignited my love for preservation and restoration. One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing how our design engaged both the university and broader community, through features like the laser-cut map at the entry and the outdoor projection wall for public screenings. The project went on to win numerous awards and is LEED Silver Certified.

For four years now I have presented this project as as a guest lecturer for the UNM SAAP Preservation Technologies and Adaptive Re-use class I discuss the process, collaborations, and preservation technologies that went into making this and other adaptive reuse projects a success.

PARADE OF PLAYHOUSES - 2015 - 2018

Architect of Record: Work Completed while employed with Baker Architecture + Design

Client: Parade of Playhouses

General Contractor: Anchor Built Inc.

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Dates: 2015 - 2018

Role: For many years, the Parade of Playhouses event brought together construction industry teams to design and build 10' x 10' x 10' playhouses to be auctioned off for charity. The 3 years that Baker A+D participated I led the design and construction of these playful structures. Each team is given a different theme to inspire their design—our creations ranged from a whimsical Western play-horse to a vibrant rainbow trout that shoots water, to an "adult playhouse" with a clever, grown-up twist. Designing for this event was always a refreshing break from our usual projects, allowing us to think playfully while contributing to a meaningful cause. In total, our designs raised over $35,000 for New Mexico Appleseed, a local group that seeks to end childhood hunger in our state.

Architect of Record: Work Completed while employed with Baker Architecture + Design

Client: Bernalillo County

General Contractor: Vigil Contracting

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Dates: 2018 - 2021

Size: 5,233 Sq Ft

Role:  I acted as Project Architect for the entirety of the project, from concept to construction. The existing Serenity Mesa Youth Recovery Center campus, located on Albuquerque's west mesa, provides long-term inpatient and transitional living services for youth who are struggling with addiction.

The prominent site sits on the edge of the mesa so the design takes into consideration the expansive views and high visibility to give the center a stronger presence within the community and an iconic structure representative of this influential program. An over-sized butterfly roof welcomes visitors and residents at the main entry while the warm yet durable material palette of wood, polished concrete, cement board, steel, quartz, and serene accent blues meld the design with the existing branding.
