SCHEMATIC DESIGN

IN-LAWS RETREAT.
A grandmas quarters slated for the back corner of a large west side property, the design straddled the line of modern and traditional southwestern. The single story residence is a one bedroom with a “bridge” between the private and public portions of the home.
The material palette used stone, traditional stucco, wood and concrete to convey New Mexico traditional with a twist. A large steel overhang shades the entry "plaza" making it suitable for high desert entertaining. A large family room sits off the kitchen which is minimal yet inviting. Flanked by 2 thickened stone walls, a narrow "bridge" delineates the public and private portions of the home. Elevating portions of the residence brings another level of intimacy to certain parts of the program. Because it sits on a lot shared with the primary residence, the goal was always the privacy of the tenant. Peek-a-boo windows located at floor level allow for natural light to penetrate without exposing the residents fully.
