HUMBLE BARN DOORS

PATTERN DESIGN

MAKING A STATEMENT

Humble Coffee Company's Downtown location is central to the new 505 Central development but needed a security barrier to separate and protect the space during the off / evening hours. Looking for a more creative and appealing option, the owner decided to hire a fabricator to design and install a set of 12'x 12' barn doors. The only thing missing? A custom pattern for the wood panels. Working with my partner we utilized the Grasshopper plug-in for Rhino to play around with several ideas, eventually landing on the organic, blob like form used. The pattern is tight enough to keep anyone from reaching in but open enough to give passers-by a glimpse of the interior.

Playful and fun, with clever nods to the roundness of the company's logo and brand, the doors are a work of functional art. Working with the fabricator, we developed the files necessary for CNC routing. The Owner went on to reuse the pattern on several other doors throughout the development.
